Crazy (and Creepy...and also Crawly) Coincidence

So, I was in the living room watching Friends before, and it's the episode where Phoebe buys Joey a drum kit which is intended to annoy Rachel so that she'd want to move back in with her again. After the drum kit fails to bother Rachel, Phoebe brings in a tarantula - exactly at the moment when I spotted a big black spider on the wall. Random!

Today was my China/Latin America presentation. I'm actually extremely happy with how it went. The professor literally said it was "incredible" - and that was just from a brief look at the paper version of our PowerPoint before we'd even started the actual presentation. I was nervous, and after all the comments and questions it was over a whopping hour and a half long, but overall I think it was pretty impressive; this may have been my proudest Westminster moment yet.

Back to unreality, I know I've said this 103,402 times but I really love Prison Break. I'd already seen tonight's episode and I still got nervous watching it. I know I've definitely said this 103,402 times as well but I love Michael Scofield. I have an excuse for loving Wentworth Miller as a person now too - I read that "while attending Princeton, Miller traveled the world performing with the school's acapella group, The Princeton Tigertones." A hot, smart singer?! Triple swoon!!!

Boardwalk + Borderline = Not Boring!

Glory glory hallelujah! I finished my 3,000 word dissertation intro and I'm so happy! Now I just have to get through my China/Latin America presentation tomorrow and I'll be good to go.

I didn't realize how evil snakebites were until this morning. Last night Laura and I went to The Boardwalk on Greek Street. We went to The Borderline afterwards and met up with Solo and his Flow friends. I guess I was pretty wasted because I forgot half of the night. I do remember almost falling once on the stage though, but I'll blame my broken boots on that. Today I received a text message from my friend Chris in response to a voicemail that I'd apparently left him too. He said my message was funny drunk, esp. the hiccups in the middle? Another thing I remember was knowing a song but I had no idea who sang it and it was bothering me, so I asked the guy next to me (who was singing it) who the band was and he didn't know. Then a couple of minutes later he'd looked for me over by the bathroom just to tell me who sang it. He was like "I chased you just to tell you that!!" which I thought was funny. Anyway it was 'The Size of a Cow' by The Wonder Stuff.

Solo's car blew up the other day-

Thank God the Snickers Bar Was Okay!

I'm totally in love with 'Amazing' by Westlife. I don't care how many people make fun of me, it's the best song by a boy band since 'I Want It That Way' and I've played it 19 times since yesterday.

I American Idoled myself out today. Laura and I watched all the guys and girls of the past week plus the eliminations. My favorites are Paris, Katharine, Elliott, Taylor, Chris, and Ace (hello!!!) By the way we get the repeats on Friday nights so no spoilers for me please, thanks guys!

These are from the last two months but I thought I'd post them anyway.

Can You Feel My Heartbit When I'm Close To You?

Yay! I saw Tahiti 80 last night! They were good!

Before they went on, Alex and I watched the opening act and I have no idea what they were called. The music was okay (uh yeah, until they started singing.) They had a big fanbase but I wasn't really into it. I thought I spotted Tahiti 80's singer (who looks like Jeff Buckley) in the crowd and tried to make eye contact, but not full-on predator-type as I wasn't totally sure if it was him. The guy was cute though so it didn't hurt to try anyway. (Turned out it was him, oh well.)

Their first two or three songs were okay, but the show got really good after that. I loved the songs on keyboard, and 'Heartbeat' was great (which included a bit of 'Love From Outer Space' as well as 'Since I Left You' by The Avalanches at the end.) I first found out about them through that song, b/c when I worked at WLIR they played it all the time and one of the DJs loved how the singer pronounced it as 'Heartbit' with his accent. The bass player was also the most smiley, jovial, teddy-bearish guy I've ever seen; he was so cute, I wanted to hug him, take him home with me and put him on my bed next to my teddy bear (although I don't think I would have had any room to sleep if that actually happened.) They ended with 'Changes' and the bass player joined the drummer for a Doves-like ending, it was sooo good!

The singer threw the pick into the crowd and I hit it with my left hand and it dropped to the floor somewhere and I lost it forever, BOO. After that I told him my too-often used, unoriginal, unseductive, generic line of "You guys were really good!" I got a pat on the shoulder with a "Thank you" followed by another delayed pat and an additional "Thank You." SCORE! I also smiled at him downstairs and he smiled back on his way out. I think my game could have been so much better if I'd tried harder. Ahh, French boys.

The sun is deceitful today. It's so bright outside, but I went to Camden market for a while and froze my ass off. (I also ate the worst fried food you could possibly imagine.) I can't wait until Spring.

Go Away Crappy Mood!

I've been in such a bad mood this past week. Between some idiot boys and a bad grade, at this point I can't wait for next week. Last night Laura cooked me dinner and we watched the pilot episode of Cold Feet which thankfully cheered me up. Later, Ana ended up staying at mine because she's currently homeless. Today was exciting as I bought shampoo and conditioner, did laundry, revised my presentation, did some dissertation clean-up, yelled at the internet for not working, and cleaned all the mirrors in the flat. I've been such a loser lately!! I'm going to see Tahiti 80 tonight though so I'll finally be mingling with both music and civilization.
I hate Blogger.com
I just made Alex a mix cd. Some songs are old and some are new and most are American. I'm not even sure, he might have some already but I'm trying. Here's the mix:

3. Jason Mraz - Wordplay
4. Ben Folds - Landed
5. The Fray - Over My Head (Cable Car)
6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
7. Screaming Trees - Nearly Lost You
8. Klaxons - Gravity's Rainbow
9. Tahiti 80 - Heartbeat
10. Matisyahu - King Without A Crown
11. The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes

13. Spinto Band - Oh Mandy
14. The KFC Song (Based on the JCB Song - I had to include it)

17. The Feeling - Sewn
18. Tears - Lovers

20. Sufjan Stevens - Chicago

Give Me the Words and I'll Say Them Like I Mean It

Okay, there's a blackout again. Same time as last week. Come on already! I was in the middle of watching Ice Dancing too, grrrr.

By the way, I found the song I was looking for. It's called 'Sewn' by The Feeling and I love it. You can download it here.

Wow, so I got totally blown off yesterday with no explanation from the guy I was supposed to hang out with. I don't want to get into the circumstances, but I really don't see any reason why he couldn't reply to me to say he didn't want to go (we did speak briefly over MSN so it's not like he was hanging on for dear life somewhere.) After a brief general chat, he simply decided not to respond to me and that was that - and everything had been totally fine as of this past week. I mean, at this point, it's not about the matter of hanging out - that's irrelevant, but no word saying he was canceling or didn't want to go? I'm sure he couldn't care less, but I sent him an e-mail just asking why he couldn't let me know our plans were off (and I didn't ask him why they were off, just why he didn't let me know?) As of now, and not surprisingly, still no response. Is it just me or is this type of behavior from a 27 year old completely ridiculous?

My past week with boys went from a pretty good high to a pretty big low. It's been looking something like this (hey, it's a blackout, I'm bored!):Current Music: Ben Folds - Landed

Boys Are Stupid - Special Weekend Edition!

Now would be a great time to blog, considering the fate of my date tonight is awaiting me somewhere in a brain in Putney. My guess is that it's not happening so I may go to Zoe's with two Dans instead.

I didn't end up going to G-A-Y last night, which made me sad to miss Simon but oh well. Instead, I sat outside at the bus stop for over an hour because Rachael, Laura and I couldn't agree on a place to go. Laura and I ended up going to The Underworld which was a great choice because it was so much fun. Plus Joy and Andi (aka cutest couple to dance to indie music ever) and their friends were randomly there which worked out really well. I don't think I sweated out as many calories as I would have at G-A-Y, but I came close. Plus obviously I like the music better at The Underworld so all in all a good night (except for the part where the garlic sauce from my chicken shish dripped out the bottom and onto my ENTIRE jacket - which I didn't even realize was happening till I was halfway done with the shish!)

Also, congratulations to me on getting my dissertation intro deadline pushed back by a week. I actually worked on it this morning for a bit and I've gotten 1,250 words done, so I'm about half way there.

Brits 2006 - Wrap-Up

Ways I can procrastinate in order not to work on my dissertation:
  • Clean my room
  • Clean the rest of the flat
  • Fool around on the internet/chat to people on MSN
  • E-mail professor asking for an extension for dissertation introduction due date (a valid question considering our colloquium has been pushed back by one week)
  • Apply for a job working at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development conference in May
  • Take a nap

That should cover it for now. I had to wake up early this morning to meet Tomo at the British Library to discuss our Latin America presentation. I finished my part of the PowerPoint and he thinks it looks really good, so I officially have the seal of approval! (By the way, we're not supposed to have more than 30 slides, and we have 101.)

I haven't been up to anything too crazy lately. Last night the Alexander Phlegming people had a party at Bluu in Hoxton so I went to that. They surprisingly played fun 50's music like they do at Boogaloo. Then we went to Legion and I was suddenly really drunk and didn't feel like staying for long, so Ana and I left around 2:00 am I think. I'd met a Welsh dude named Jake at the first bar who I hung out with. He came with me to the second bar, but we didn't really speak there. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

This has also been a really strange week for me technology-wise. Between 1 MSN chat, 1 AIM chat, 1 e-mail, and a couple of text messages, I have reached a definite conclusion that boys are both random and weird. I wonder if the things they've said to me would have ever come out of their mouths if we didn't have these modern methods of communication?

And now, for a brief commentary on the Brits 2006:

Coldplay Performance - Chris Martin was a total spasmatazz, it was a little disturbing. And is it just me or is he looking like Justin Guarini lately?

KT Tunstall Outfit/Performance - I don't care how skinny you are, no one should EVER wear vertical striped black and white pants. I have to say her black top and pink dress were stunning though. Also, those girls who came out on the stage? What was that? During a KT Tunstall performance?? I guess the song would have been a bit bland without them; they reminded me of the two random girls who danced with I Am Kloot at V.

Kaiser Chiefs Acceptance Speeches - I'm really glad they swept (well, I guess three awards isn't sweeping, but compared to everyone else they did well.) I'm also happy they won best live act because, well, they're great live. They did have the worst acceptance speeches I've heard in a long time though. You'd think the anal drummer would have had something properly prepared.

Madonna Outfit/Acceptance Speech - She has got an amazing body, but she definitely should have been wearing a bra. Also, that mish-mosh accent, I really can't stand it. How can she not realize that everyone knows it's ridiculously fake, and just makes her sound like an idiot?

James Blunt Performance - Dude looked scared shitless when he started his performance. I guess I would be too if so many people disliked me. People need to calm down with the insults (cough, Ben, cough); he's not completely talentless or horrible, he's okay and there's no need to verbally beat him up so much.

Kanye West Outfit/Acceptance Speech - Those glasses are so wrong. They look like toy ones my brother had when he was like 6. Unless he's really doing it for a laugh and not being serious? Also, remember kids that no one should release an album when December Registration drops - it's for your own good.

Arctic Monkeys Acceptance Speech - I would love to know how much of the public knew that it was Keith We Are Scientists who was speaking on behalf of Arctic Monkeys?

I missed the beginning of the show, including the Kaiser Chiefs' performance. I think they're repeating it today so watching it provides another bullet for my procrastination methods.

I Got Seoul But I'm Not A Seouldier

There's nothing like having an extremely painful headache and feeling like you have to throw up, only to arrive home to a blackout. Puking by candlelight, that could have potentially been a lovely sight. I guess it's good that at least I had candles this time.

I felt so awful (like one of those headaches where it hurts to keep your eyes open - or closed for that matter), that I decided to hop into bed at 8:15 pm. As could have been predicted, an hour has passed and I'm obviously not sleeping. Thankfully the headache went away though.

So today I had an interesting conversation in class with Tomo, the South Korean guy who I'm doing a project with. He is weeks ahead in having our presentation finished, which are guidelines I'm definitely not used to. He explained to me that the work ethic is very different in South Korea which is why he's so quick to do his work here. Some examples of his lifestyle at home include:

  • Working Monday-Saturday from 8:00 am - 10:00 pm.
  • His company sending a bus to pick up all of it's workers at 6:00 am (it's an hour and a half ride to the office.)
  • If he doesn't finish a project within 48 hours he's in deep shit.
  • They don't really do many social activities; everything mostly revolves around work.
  • His company provides each employee with an apartment after working for them for two years. Within his contract, if he stays with the company for 15 years, he then owns the flat after that time. If he breaks the contract and leaves the company before the 15 years, he owes them back pay for all of the rent.
  • His company would do the same with a car, but since transportation is so efficient there, he doesn't want one.
  • One hour of overtime is equivalent to earning US$250.
  • Also, this isn't company related but instead of using a Metrocard or Oyster Card to enter the subway, there is a chip within the phone that acts like a mini debit card, so you can use your phone to get into the subway!!!

My weekend in Bournemouth was short but fun. After a few minor delays prior to taking off, including a missing debit card and and a Six Nations Rugby match, Laura, Mairead and I made it to Laura's house at about 6:00 pm. After dinner, we went to Bliss which was packed. When some dude asked me if I had a boyfriend, I lied and said that I did because I wasn't interested in him. I ended up kissing his friend instead, whoops. Oh yeah, and he was 21, so double whoops. Then we headed to Toko which was, like Bliss, £££, but fun as well. I particularly enjoyed the random indie blob of three in between all the cheese. We were screaming the words to 'Somebody Told Me', 'I Predict a Riot' and 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' which seemed to puzzle the sluts and the chavs a bit. On Sunday we went to town to walk around and I got a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup milkshake at ShakeAway. It was good but I think the Kit Kat one is better. Mairead and I bused it back to London and she got the driver to let us off in front of her flat in Kilburn instead of us having to go all the way to Victoria which was so lucky. On a related note, I just have to say that it didn't rain in London for six weeks, and the one day I go to the sea the skies decide to open (typical.) Which also reminds me that I am missing the snow a bit in New York right now.

As Aaron Karo would say, here are some things I've been ruminating about lately:

  • Did you hear about how Dick Cheney accidentally shot someone while hunting quail? What a moron!
  • I had two cute guys ask me if they could come over to my flat tonight, and all it took was for me to mention the word "blackout" in a text. Why did I not think of that before?
  • Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and once again I am dateless. I'm not feeling as crappy as I normally would though, maybe because I've never been Valentineless in London before?
  • I do have a date on Thursday with a guy I've been wanting to jump since November. I am so effking excited!

My Milkshake Brings All the Boys to the Yard

I'm off to Bournemouth in a bit for an overnight trip with Laura, Zoe and Mairead. I am so excited to go to the milkshake shop. They make milkshakes with every kind of candy bar. Last time I had the Kit Kat one (FYI Kit Kats taste so much better here since the chocolate is different.) Yum.

End of the week's been good. I went to Walkabout in Leicester Square on Thursday night with Ana and a few of her Spanish friends for a birthday drink. I'd never been; the people weren't as slimy as I'd expected (I think that's the clientele mainly on Monday nights.) The venue is an old church which was really cool. One of the guys we were with works in a Caffe Nero in Fulham and he said that Hugh Grant comes in for coffee 1-2 times/week and he lives around the corner (uh, and his face supposedly looks like "a bag of rice"?!) Hugh should start preparing himself for stalker alert since I plan on going there and hunting him down. Anyway, I had a kangaroo burger; it was okay, the flavor was a bit odd but at least I've finally tried it. So I've now had kangaroo, ostrich, deer and rabbit aside from the regular animals (sorry Todd.) Not sure what else I want to try but I've still never had a buffalo/bison burger so I might have to get that when I get back to the States.

Last night Ana had her party at her house which was good. It was all people from my course and I stuffed my face with cake and other junk food.

Annie, Are You Okay?

I took a hip hop class at the gym today. The teacher was really good (I think he may have been a choreographer) but no offense to the rest of the class, it just wasn't up to speed for me. The classes I used to take at Synergy were 10 times better. It was short, clocking in at only 45 minutes, so I decided to stay for the "Michael Jackson Street Jam" class with the same teacher. We did warm ups to the Jackson 5 and the actual routine to 'Smooth Criminal.' I don't know how MJ never broke his neck because all we seemed to do was move our heads up and down like in the video. Again the class was a bit slow so I didn't even get to do any crotch-grabbing moves, oh well.

Shit man, I've only done two PowerPoint slides for my group presentation that I need to have done by Friday afternoon. I'd rather watch two back-to-back episodes of Desperate Housewives though so I guess I'll attempt to work on this thing tomorrow night. Blah.

Valentine or Palestine?

I went to the school pub today with about 10 people from my course for an unexpected 4 hours after class, despite the fact that our afternoon dissertation seminar was cancelled. I also unexpectedly got to meet with my professor in between beers to discuss my last IR paper. I knew I did worse on the second one so that wasn't a shock, but I was surprised to find out that I didn't get a "high 60" on the first one like I'd thought (I was still confused about what that grade meant); I actually got in the "high 60s", more like a 68!! I got a 63 on the second one, but after averaging them out, he said I should still get some sort of merit since it's in the 65 range. SCORE!

I had two conversations with Ibrahim at the pub. The first was brief regarding whether I had a boyfriend. I said I'd been dating someone for two weeks and as of today I'm 85% sure I won't have a Valentine's date next Tuesday, and we discussed the boyfriend/girlfriend topic for another two minutes and that was that. Then we had a separate, longer discussion about some work he'd done in Palestine (where he's from) and if I'd want to get involved in it. Anyway, on his way out, he asked me about either Valentine's or Palestine, and not hearing what he said I responded with an "I'll think about it and let you know!" Err, I hope it was in regards to Palestine.

I met John for a drink at Liberties where the bartender, Mark, who'd I'd met once a few weeks ago, was bartending again. He totally remembered me and asked for my number. He seems like a nice guy, but he already texted me twice in the last hour. Better than nothing I guess?

I know I'm way behind in OC epidsodes since I'm in London and all, but I just watched the 'Ryan's Becoming a Fisherman' episode and they finally dropped the craigslist bomb. Geez people, that one was only a matter of time.

I just heard that 'Beep' song by the Pussycat Doll(s). I assume it's been out for a while in America but as far as I know it's just hit here. I'm trying not to like it but it's actually okay. Although they've got Will.I.Am. in it, and if you just replaced the "beep" part with the words "My Humps", can't we technically say that we've heard this song before, just in a much worse version?

La-Di-Da-Di, We Likes To Pilate

I did pilates today. I did pilates today? I'm still confused about that. I went to the gym with the intentions of finally taking an aerobics class but it was cancelled, so my choices were either running on the treadmill (AKA dying), taking Yoga (AKA sleeping), or doing pilates (AKA sleeping with my eyes open.) It was okay, my body hurt a lot at some points, but I'm really hoping it kills tomorrow to see if they really work. I also did a bunch of machines beforehand though so the results may be a bit warped.

I just heard this song on the radio by Klaxons called Gravity's Rainbow. I like it!

Are You Ready For Some Football?

I need help with figuring out a song. It goes something like "Give me a song and I'll sing it...give me a {something} and I'll {something} it." I heard it on Virgin today, its by a guy, and I think I've heard it once before. I really like it and can't figure it out from typing it into Google. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Last night I went to Tine's and then to Bryan's to pre-drink before going out. I drank a whole bottle of wine myself which probably wasn't necessary but whatever. The people from the dorms are from all over the place - Bahrain, Norway, Brazil, etc. etc. All different ages too. Those Alexander Fleming people have got the randomest assortment of friends I've ever seen. Anyway we went to Tabernacle near Old Street. I was somewhat drunk and just remember arguing for an hour with Brian about something regarding sex and blowjobs, but I forgot what the premise of the argument was about.

I'm going to Belushi's tonight in Camden Town to watch Super Bowl CVLXIII with Ben and Dandan. It doesn't start till around midnight though, so I hope I can last all night. Last year's Super Bowl was great. I won the first quarter in the pool at Kris' house which was $25, and then after going to Matt's during half-time, I won the final for $99. That was probably the monetary highlight of 2005 for me.

Spinning Wheel Got To Go 'Round

I pulled a Laura! (Not as in a hooked up with a girl named Laura, I got run over by a vehicle like Laura.) Yesterday afternoon I went for drinks with John in Camden Town, and on the way back I decided to cross Castlehaven Road in the middle of the street instead of at the light. All of the cars were stopped, but as I crossed the street I didn't notice the bicyclist wearing a bright yellow 'watch out so you don't get run over' vest. I did a slow motion, grab onto the biker and procede to fall over in front of everyone move. SO EMBARASSING. I am so done with jaywalking.

Last night was a bust. I met up with Zoe, her friend Elisa, Laura, Alex, Emily, Joy, Andi, Laura's friend Georgina and her friend at the Steam Passage in Angel. Around midnight we went to Islington Academy for XFM's First Friday, and after about 45 minutes of waiting on line and freezing our toes off, the bouncers were only letting people in on a one-out, one-in basis. We left and some of us went to The Bull for a bit. A girl in the bathroom asked me where my accent was from based on me asking if there was any toilet paper in the next stall. After I told her NY, she got so excited that she kept imitating the accent for the next 10 minutes saying "Oh my Gawd!! What the fuck?! Oh my Gawd, what the fuck?!" It was funny at first but not after she wouldn't let me leave.

Today I went to the school library to get some books so I can begin writing my dissertation, then I went to Caffe Nero to read Angels & Demons. I also finally saw my first real life JCB. This is still the cutest video ever.

Cadbury Mini Rolls Are the New Doughnut

Apparently Thursday nights are hoppin at the Tottenham Police Station in Seven Sisters. I am able to report this firsthand as I've just spent the last three and a half hours there.

So the story basically is that Ana's crazy housemate finally snapped. After over three months of verbally abusing my friend, she physically attacked her yesterday. Ana went to the hospital last night luckily with just a displaced finger and now a backache. I went with her to the station tonight to file a report. After all the waiting, it still took an hour just to get the report into the computer. The cop was nice though and offered us Cadbury Mini Rolls which were really yummy and my highlight of the dreadfully boring experience. You also have to love how they handled the guy next to us on line -

Cop: How can I help you?
Man: My phone was stolen.
Cop: Was it stolen or you lost it?
Man: It was stolen.
Cop: Where/how did this happen?
Man: On the bus.
Cop: Did you see who did it?
Man: No, it was just on the bus.
Cop: So you lost it. Next!
